From Mmm Bop to Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, how to write clever lyrics without being clever

I’m a writer and while that carries certain obvious connotations of its own, this aspect of me colors how I appreciate other art forms as well, particularly music.  While some people enjoy music that makes you dance…

Often quite awkwardly

… I tend to like music with clever lyrics.  Which is why I like guys like Elliott Smith, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, etc.  These artists who filled their songs with words.

And looked awesome doing it

But, I’m also someone with a twisted sense of humor, so the opposite is also true.

It’s the Bizarro version of Craig

Which why I like on some, camp, level songs with ridiculous lyrics, songs that use made up words or substitute grunts for words altogether.

Once there was this band who hadn’t enough words to fit their tune… Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm, Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm Mmmm…

There’s something about how these performers half-assed their way to glory that is rather magnificent.  So this post applauds all those people who couldn’t be bothered to be clever and become clever all the same.

The only possible definition of “clever” that would include these fellas.
